Team Sky have confirmed that Italy's Filippo Ganna will be part of the British WorldTour team for 2019, boosting their squad for the cobbled Classics and time trials. 22-year-old Ganna has ridden for UAE Team Emirates for the last two seasons. He won the under 23 Paris-Roubaix in 2016 and won the Individual Pursuit world title on the track in 2016 and 2018. He recently finished second to Gianni Moscon in the Italian national time trial championships and is currently competing with Italy in the track World Cup in Paris.ADVERTISEMENT "Its a dream to sign for Team Sky. Its a very impressive team and everyone in cycling is used to seeing them winning the big races," Ganna said. "I hope I can continue to develop and improve on my first two years on the road. Im excited to meet up with the team for the first training camp and to start to work together. The team is really impressive in how they approach time trials and team time trials and that is an area I feel I can develop, in addition to the one-day races and one-week stage races going forward. "In 2018 I started to experience the Classics races as a pro for the first time and that is another area I would like to learn and focus on, to one day be able to compete at the front of those races." Ganna is Team Skys second confirmed signing for 2019 after Jhonatan Narvaez's arrival from Quick-Step Floors was announced on Thursday. Team Sky are also expected to sign Colombian climber Ivan Sosa but his move has been delayed by a contractual dispute between his former and current agents. Irelands Eddie Dunbar joined Team Sky in September after the collapse of the Aqua Blue Sport team. You can read more at Cyclingnews.com 660-248-5061

Il Lombardia has brought down the curtain on the long 2018 European season, withThibaut Pinot (Groupama-FDJ) riding into the history books with panache on Saturday. The Frenchmanjumped away from defending champion Vincenzo Nibali (Bahrain-Merida) at thetop of the Civiglio climb with 14km remaining and soloed to a career-defining victory. He won alone in Como with a 32-second gap on Nibali to take his first-ever Monument, while Dylan Teuns (BMC Racing) took the sprint from a select chasing group 43 seconds behind Pinot to claim the final podium spot.ADVERTISEMENT The 112th running of the Italian Classic once again took place with Lake Como as the backdrop, providing stunning scenery for the spectators to enjoy as the riders battled over 241km.The race started in Bergamo under sunny skies and concluded nearly six hours later as the autumn leaves fell and the sun set in Como, making for a spectacular finale to the 2018 Classics. Bernal shows flash of Classics potential at Il Lombardia
October 14, 2018 (08:00) [ Indexed from (319) 404-0187 ]
Egan Bernal (Team Sky) confirmed his huge potential yet again at Il Lombardia with a brilliant move across to the break on the descent or the Sormano. However, the difficulties of the final 50km of racing showed that not even the most promising talent in the peloton can compete for victory after two months out of action due to injury. Bernal crashed hard at the Clasica San Sebastian in early August and needed nose and mouth surgery. He made a comeback at the Giro dellEmilia last Saturday but was not expected to have an impact at the far tougher Il Lombardia. But when team leader Gianni Moscon suffered a puncture on the descent of the Colma di Sormano, Bernal stepped up and dived down the descent and across to Primoz Roglic (LottoNL-Jumbo), Nibali and Pinot. It would be the winning move of the race, but Bernal eventually paid the price for his solo effort and was distanced on the lower slopes of the Civiglio climb. He finished 12th, 1:31 behind Pinot but only one place behind Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) and ahead of Michael Woods (EF Education First-Drapac).ADVERTISEMENT He had the courage to take on the race but just not the legs to finish it off. Im happy because I went two months without racing and I only began racing again one week ago, Bernal said at the finish area before heading to the Team Sky for a final post-race shower of the season. "I wanted to do a good result here and I finished 12th. Thats not great, but I need to be happy as its normal that I needed time to recover after the crash. Now Im happy and motivated for next season. On the second part of the Muro di Sormano, the race kicked off," he said. "I was suffering and didnt really have the legs. I focused on getting across to the first group on the descent because I knew on the last climb I wouldnt be with them. So I preferred to make a fast descent, but without taking risks. I was always under control. I was able to re-join the leaders, which was really nice. You can read more at Cyclingnews.com More...
Plaza extends with Israel Cycling Academy
October 14, 2018 (08:00) [ Indexed from 4132620058 ]
Ruben Plaza has signed on for another year withIsrael Cycling Academy. The 38-year-old Spaniard announced his decision Friday with a presentation on Facebook Live. Plaza joined the team this season after three seasons with the Australian Orica WorldTour teams. "When I signed with ICA for the 2018 season, I was really thinking that this is going to be my final year as a pro, but as the season progressed I realized that I am still very much motivated," Plaza said in a statement released by the team. "The fantastic experience being a leader and a veteran in a young team, being part of a project that is changing Cycling in Israel - has given new meaning to what I do on the bike," he said. "Then came the historic and unforgettable Giro D'italia and the moments I will never ever forget when all the country united behind the team."ADVERTISEMENT Plaza had a resurgence of sorts with the Israeli-registered team this year, taking his first win in three years as he soloed to a stage win and overall victory at theVuelta a Castilla y Leon in April. Plaza made the roster for the team's Giro d'Italia squad and the historic start in Jerusalem, and he nearly scored a stage win when he was second toMaximilian Schachmann (Quick-Step Floors) on stage 18 to Prato Nevoso. "I was close, but close is not enough," Plaza said. "I wanted to give myself and the team a dream win, and this mission is still unfulfilled. When the team came to me with the offer to continue for another year, I asked myself if I can still deliver with ability and motivation, and the answer was, 'Yes, I can.' So I see it as almost another chance to leave a mark and continue the journey with this unique team." Plaza finished 10 seconds behind the German on that Giro stage as the day-long breakaway disintegrated on the final climb, just missing out on his goal to win a stage in each Grand Tour after taking wins at the Vuelta a Espana in 2015 and 2005, and in the Tour de France in 2015. Team co-owner Sylvan Adams hinted that Plaza will get a chance at his Giro win again next year. You can read more at Cyclingnews.com More...

Thibaut Pinot (Groupama-FDJ) often seems to be racing against himself, against his demons and against his own weaknesses and tactical errors. But his victory at Il Lombardiaand the way he won the final Monument of the season swept away all Pinots doubts, rewarding his panache, aggression and desire to win. I have a tattoo that says 'Solo la vittoria e bella', and this is the most beautiful victory for me, Pinot explained as he tried to understand what he had achieved by winning Il Lombardia. Il Lombardia is the most beautiful race of all for me. Its a magnifique race. I think Il Lombardia reflects who I am as rider. Its my favourite race, and to win it alone after a duel with [Vincenzo] Nibali is incredible. I think it was good to watch as it was to ride.ADVERTISEMENT I showed what I can do today. We have live in the moment, and I believe that everything that has happened so far in my life has lead me to win Il Lombardia. Pinot knew it was the right moment to attack when he saw Nibali go after Primoz Roglic (LottoNL-Jumbo) on the final slopes of the Colma di Sormano. There were still almost 50km left to race, but he followed his instinct. I wanted to do something on the Sormano, and when Nibali attacked I said, Bingo! I knew it was a good attack, Pinot explained. Valverde ends season with 11th in Il Lombardia
October 14, 2018 (08:00) [ Indexed from Cyclingnews.com ]
Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) closed out his season with 11th place at Il Lombardia on Saturday, sticking with the best until the final attacks fromPrimo Rogli (LottoNL-Jumbo), Vincenzo Nibali (Bahrain-Merida) and Thibaut Pinot (Groupama-FDJ) relegated him to the role of chaser. The reigning world champion finished 1:31 down on winner Pinot in a five-man group that also included Egan Bernal (Team Sky), Michael Woods (EF Education First-Drapac),Sbastien Reichenbach (Groupama-FDJ) and Mikel Nieve (Mitchelton-Scott). I felt the tiredness of this long season a bit today," Valverde said in a post on his team's website. "I didnt really feel bad and was able to stay close to the top contenders all day, struggling but fighting into those final climbs. However, youve got to be honest: there were some of the best in the world in this race, and they might have come to this race in better condition."ADVERTISEMENT Valverde was in the much-reduced peloton when Primo Rogli (LottoNL-Jumbo) attacked at the top of theSormano climb and blew the race apart.Toward the top, Nibali and Thibaut Pinot jumped out of the group, eventually catching Rogli and being joined by Bernal as well. Pinot eventually attacked Nibali with 14km to go and held off the defending champion for the win. Valverde simply lacked the horsepower to go with the winning moves, but in a season that has seen him take 14 wins, topped off with the world championship in last month in Austria, the 39-year-old Spaniard said he was not disappointed with his Lombardia result. "Disappointed about not winning? Not at all " not if you consider how Ive fared this season," Valverde said. "Id be sad if I wasnt able to stay on the bike and had to DNF, but I had on my mind this was one of todays likely scenarios. I can only be satisfied about my 2018 season and this rainbow jersey on my chest. You can read more at Cyclingnews.com (304) 583-4705

Vincenzo Nibali (Bahrain-Merida) smiled on the podium of Il Lombardia as if he had won. His second place behind an untouchable Thibaut Pinot (Groupama-FDJ) was a personal victory and a source of huge satisfaction, coming just three months since a spectator-caused crash on stage 12 of the Tour de France to LAlpe dHuez left him with a fractured vertebrae. Nibali wanted a third victory at Il Lombardia; he wanted to dedicate victory to his wife on their wedding anniversary and remember his grandfather who died this year. He wanted to prove that he was back to his best and that the pain and suffering of the last three months was worth it. His daughter, Emma, stood proudly with her dad on the podium, thinking he had won. The many Italian tifosi also cheered Nibali as if he had won Il Lombardia too.ADVERTISEMENT Id hoped to win for lots of reasons, and I never ride to finish second, but Pinot was on a great day. There was nothing else I could do. Pinot deserved to win, Nibali said sportingly. Ive given it everything to get back to my best, but its been difficult. I was always playing catch up. The doctors said Id need three months to recover without the operation, and its been three months now, so to finish second at Il Lombardia makes what Ive been through worth it. Its definitely a kind of victory for me. Nibali was expecting a battle with Pinot and Alejandro Valverde (Movistar), but a different race emerged over the top of the steep Colma di Sormano. Valverde was surprisingly isolated and struggling. Primoz Roglic (LottoNL-Jumbo) had forced the pace on the double-digit gradient of the wall of Sormano, then Nibali and Pinot seized the initiative. Richie Porte will end his time with the BMC Racing Team at the Hammer Hong Kong race on October 14, and the following Tour of Guangxi (October 16-21). The US-based team will send reduced squads to the two final races of the season. Porte, who won the Tour de Suisse this year, will join Trek-Segafredo for 2019. BMC is merging with the CCC team in 2019 Jrgen Roelandts, Stefan Kng, Miles Scotson, and Nathan Van Hooydonck round out the Hong Kong Hammer squad.ADVERTISEMENT "I think we are all looking forward to racing in Hong Kong at the Hammer Series decider and it works well that we can combine this with the Tour of Guangxi, the final UCI WorldTour race of the season, said Sports Director Jackson Stewart. Michael Schr will join the squad for the Tour of Guangxi, the last WorldTour race of the year. "In 2017 we had a very motivated roster and saw good performances which we are looking to repeat this year. Audrey Cordon-Ragot praised the UCI's decision to introduce a minimum salary for the top tier of womens teams beginning in 2020. The French time trial champion, who is set to race with Trek-Segafredo next year, said that it was one of the most important steps toward improving the overall professionalism of womens cycling. "It's a big step that we are taking now," Cordon-Ragot told Cyclingnews in an interview at the SportHotel, where the French national team was staying ahead of the 2018 Road World Championships in Innsbruck, Austria. "There is still a long road ahead because we have so many things still to improve in women's cycling, but this is the first step to take, and it is so important."ADVERTISEMENT UCI President David Lappartient told Cyclingnews in July that a two-tiered team system would be introduced in 2020 and that the top tier would be paid a minimum salary. In Innsbruck, he confirmed the two tiers " Womens WorldTeams and Continental Teams - and that the top level would be required to pay riders a minimum salary equal to that of the mens Professional Continental teams, currently set at just above 30,000. There will be five Womens WorldTeams in 2020, and the minimum salary will be gradually phased in over a three-year period. The goal is to have 10 teams in 2021 and 15 teams by 2022. Nibali focused on Il Lombardia but considering his options beyond 2019
October 14, 2018 (08:00) [ Indexed from Cyclingnews.com ]
Vincenzo Nibali is focused on ending his season with a strong performance at Il Lombardia and possibly even a third victory but he is also looking much further down the road, to the final phase of his career, as he decides if he will stay beyond 2019 with Bahrain-Merida or look for a new challenge elsewhere, perhaps even with Team Sky. Nibali will start Il Lombardia wearing the number 1 as the 2017 winner. He also won the event known as, Race of the Falling Leaves, in 2015 and has won either a Grand Tour or a Monument Classic for the last six seasons. Nibali won Milan-San Remo in March and so considers his 2018 season a success despite the pain and suffering he endured after being knocked off his bike by a spectator on stage 12 of the Tour de France on Alpe d'Huez. He underwent vertebroplasty surgery to ease the pain and returned in time for the Vuelta a Espaa, in the hope of finding the form for the World Championships in Innsbruck but cracked before the decisive climb.ADVERTISEMENT Nibali's form is better now than in Innsbruck two weeks ago but he does not know if it will be good enough to allow him to win Il Lombardia for a third time. "My form is an incognito," Nibali said with pragmatism. "I can only do what I can, my legs are what they are. It'll be about grit and determination. I haven't trained specifically for il Lombardia, I'm using the form I got from Vuelta, the Worlds and Giro dellEmilia, where I was eighth.
