The L.E.D. Advantage: (Light Emitting Diode)

  • LED's are incredibly energy efficient. LED's generate almost no heat and can therefore use all of their electrical energy to generate light. Old-fashioned incandescent light bulbs give off most of their energy in the form of heat carrying infrared light photons - only about 10% of the light produced is in the human eye visible range of the light spectrum. This wastes a lot of electricity, or battery power life in the case of flashlights. LED's can be as much as 70% more energy efficient than incandescent lighting.
  • LED's are longer lasting. The lifespan of LED's is measured in years rather than hours like incandescent light bulbs. LED's are rated to burn brightly for up to 100,000 hours of service - that's almost 11.5 years! of continuous, daily light! This compares to just 11 hours! for a standard old-fashioned incandescent flashlight bulb, and that's if you don't drop it!
  • LED's are compact. A great deal of light can be created and emitted in a very small space using light emitting diode technology. LED's are easy to carry and store.

The Basic, OLD-fashioned Light Bulb:

Light bulbs are now an old-fashioned method of producing light that have remained more or less the same since their invention in 1879! Step aside Mr. Edison, as the new LED technology takes lighting to a whole new realm. A light bulb consists of two metal contacts attached to a thin, very fragile filament that is housed in another thin walled, breakable glass bulb filled with various inert gasses. When a light bulb is connected to a power source, an electrical current flows from one contact to another, heating the filament until it is red hot. When the filament reaches a temperature of around 4,000º F, it glows, giving off a small amount of visible light. Incandescent light bulbs give off most of their energy in the form of heat. Only about 10% of the energy they produce is in the visible light spectrum!

The Incredible, NEW L.E.D.: (Light Emitting Diode)

A diode is the type of electronic circuit used in semiconductors. Light Emitting Diodes (L.E.D.'s) not only conduct electricity, but also produce radiant energy or light while they do it. A basic LED consists of a semiconductor diode chip mounted in a frame, conncted to electrical wires and encased in protective epoxy. Electrical charges change the energy levels in the diode, causing the light to be produced. Depending on the type or combination of semiconductor materials used, the wavelength of the light, and therefore the color of the light produced by the LED can be controlled. Not all LED's are created the same – some manufacturers save money by using cheap, old technology LED's but Coast® LED-Lenser® uses only the very highest quality LED's from Nichia® Japan and Lumileds (Luxeon brand) LED's invented in Silicon Valley, USA. Furthermore, Coast® LED-Lenser® engineers match the technology of each light to the precise configuration of the LED to ensure optimum performance from every Coast® LED-Lenser® flashlight.

Patented Optoelectronic Reflector Technology:

  • Crystal Reflector Tube Lens System. This patent pending technology is designed to focus and increase the light output from the high intensity LED. The light is lined with a highly reflective Italian made crystal that intensifies the light output, providing a much brighter beam than comparable LED lights.
  • Cloverleaf Reflector Lens System. Like the Crystal Reflector Tube System, this patent pending technology focuses and increases the light output from each high intensity LED in the “Cloverleaf" array. The reflective crystal in the cloverleaf intensifies the light to produce a brighter, broader beam than ordinary LED flashlights.
  • Prism Reflector Lens System. Other Coast LED-Lenser feature the patent pending Prism Reflector System. In this case a prism lens is used to step up the light output from a single, Super Flux Luxeon high intensity LED. The result is an incredibly bright beam of light that uses very little energy. Not only is the beam more focused and “deeper" too, that is it penetrates further into the darkness.

Power Transformation Technology: (P.T.T.)

Coast® LED-Lenser's Power Transformation Technology (PTT) overpowers other LED lights. PTT flashlights use a microprocessor to digitally increase the voltage supplied to the LED and to regulate the current at the same time. This allows you to get a brighter flashlight in a smaller package as well as more consistent brightness from the LED for the life of the battery. For instance, the Coast® LED-Lenser® DigiTac series of flashlights produce 1.25 Watts with a single, economical and easy to find single 'AA' battery. This means you are getting the power of a 3x 'C' Cell flashlight from just a single AA size battery! PTT also provides more steady use of the power in your batteries. Standard flashlights start to diminish in brightness as soon as they're turned on. But with PTT technology, your LED flashlight maintains its peak brightness until the batteries are close to being completely depleted at < 0.7 VDC. The DC/DC High Tech transducer uses a nanosecond clock timed LED circuit to provide the ultimate intensity with lengthened run time. This Light Intensity corresponds to about 16 standard LED's and uses the latest optoelectronic technologies. The diode life span of 100,000 operation hours is in addition practically inexhaustible. Similar to the light strength of a headlight yet operates on just ONE, economical and easy to find AA Size Battery.
